Improving the Health of Children in Rural China through Collaboration with China Development Research Foundation (CDRF)

In March 2017, Stephen Badger, Mars Global Advisor, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Mars and the China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) with the aim of raising food safety and nutrition awareness among children living in poor rural areas.

A group of Associates from the Mars GFSC visited Dejiang County, a poverty-stricken area in Eastern Guizhou province, China in June to gain an understanding of children’s living conditions. Their visits to local schools assisted them in identifying ways to help improve food safety practices.

The research team found that although school administrators and teachers were greatly concerned about food safety, they lacked access to credible information.

The Mars GFSC team are now working to develop appropriate materials for teachers, school chefs and children to help ensure children living in these areas have access to food safety knowledge as well as cleaner, more nutritional food. More to come on this in the near future.
